Carex intumescens, also known as Shining Bur or Bladder Sedge, is a perennial sedge native to Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. This is a graceful sedge that grows in clusters, 1-2’ tall, with dramatic seed structures that resemble multi-pointed stars.

It prefers moist to medium forest floors, wetlands, stream banks, and shorelines in many soil types, including clay. Tolerates occasional flooding and works well in rain gardens. Full sun to full shade, but dappled shade is preferred.

Host plant for skipper and satyr butterflies, as well as moths and other insects. Seeds are eaten by birds. Great for shade gardens or habitat under trees.
